Debt planning questions
Understand the terms behind your options before choosing a plan.
How does mortgage amortization work?
Amortization is the process of paying down a loan over time. With a typical fixed-rate mortgage, the principal-and-interest payment stays the same, but its split changes: more goes toward interest early on, and more toward principal as the balance falls. Taxes and insurance can change your total payment.
What should I check before paying extra on my mortgage?
Check your loan terms for a prepayment penalty. Small additional principal payments usually do not trigger one, but some loans charge for an early payoff or a large payment. Ask your lender or servicer how to apply extra money to principal and whether a penalty applies to your planned payment.
How is debt consolidation different from debt settlement?
Consolidation uses a new loan to repay existing debts, leaving one loan to repay. Settlement seeks a creditor agreement to accept less than the balance owed. A lower consolidation payment can still cost more over a longer term. Settlement is not guaranteed and may affect credit, trigger collections or create tax consequences.
